THE ANNIVERSARY OF MUHARRAM, AROSBAYA CITIZEN MAKE “JHIN PEDDES”

AROSBAYA Madurese have a unique way of commemorating the month of Muharram by cooking porridge. This is proof that culinary matters in the rituals of Madurese culture. In Bangkalan Regency, porridge has its own designation namely “Jhin Peddes” or can be called “Spicy Porridge”. So the month of Muharram, citizens usually welcome it by cooking spicy porridge. Even though it’s called spicy, the taste of jhin peddes starch is not spicy at all. Spicy frills appear of large red chili as a porridge topping. The taste of jhin peddes is actually tasty because the rice is cooked into porridge and then doused with coconut milk. In addition to chili slices, there are also a few slices of omelet, fried peanuts, and small celery. Although there are spicy frills because of the sprinkling of chili pieces on top of the porridge, the taste is just the opposite. This spicy porridge offers a savory and delicious sensation. “event though it is only porridge, it is very delicious if it is enjoyed because of the presence of coconut milk which makes a very strong and addictive fat taste.” Said Amara, a citizen of Arosbaya District, Bangkalan Regency. (Friday, 24 Oct 19)

The time of the implementation of the jhin peddes did not take place one day as the tradition of porridge Suro in Javanese society which was held every 10th (Ashura day). However, it is valid for a whole month in the month of Muharram. Depending on when each family has the flexibility of time to make it. Jhin peddes was made not only for consumption by their family and relatives but also for donations to their closest neighbors. This is where we can feel a form of solidarity. Because by giving Jhin Peddes to the neighbors can strengthen the sense of solidarity and increase neighborly harmony. Besides that, of course, it will be a repellent for reinforcements because providing someone can avoid disaster. “I like to make this porridge and then deliver it to my neighbors so I an enjoy my porridge so that I can strengthen my sense of solidarity. Maybe by sharing it can be said alms so that my family kept away from all disasters.” Said Rudianah, a citizen of Arosbaya District, Bangkalan Regency.
