The Unique Celebration of Safar Month


KLAMPIS - Bator village, Bangkalan District Madura. Safar a month of Islam, the people in the village celebrated the month as a sharing event. This month has own spiritual meaning for Madurese people. Its purposes to celebrate the second month of Islam. This event is a routine one that has to be done this month.  People in that village shared “Jhin Manis (sweet porridge)” as gratitude for their life that has been through. Jhin Manes or Porridge Safar was made of the combination of flour that was made as a colorful one. There are white and red colors in one porridge. Madurese people called it a jin mera pote because it was dominated by white and red color.

The process to make the porridge is quite easy. People make porridge with their neighbors. They divide the task to make it easier. The difference with other, Khozinatut Taqiyah just makes the porridge with their mother in the night. They make the porridge after her mother finished working. It becomes the symbol of gratitude to God that has been providing sustenance. So that’s why this tradition should be kept and preserved (17, Oct 2019).

Make a safar porridge in this month is a must. Most of the people in Madura make porridge and give it to their neighbors. This porridge is the continues of the previous month that people make tajhin Sora. The porridge is very unique. If the porridge was made of rice, this porridge is made of rice flour or sticky rice with and mix with coconut milk. The white for the salt one and the red for the sweet. It has various flavors while eating.  On the other side, it also has a topping such as pearls to make various tastes. The recipe never changed from the past. It can taste only once a year. The various flavor that has deep meaning to through the life with blessings.

The tradition of jhin manes carried out is not without reason, these rituals are carried out to recognize the important history in Islam. This porridge symbolizes courage and purity, which means Red (symbol of courage) and white (symbol of purity). “The main point of this tradition is just like gratitude. The served of the Tajhin are various it is based on the creativity of each people. But the basic ingredients must be sweet porridge. It can be black porridge, green bean porridge. It is okay according to their own as long as it is sweet”. (Friday/17/19). On the other side, it is also permitted if you don’t want to share tajhin manes, but according to Siti Adha, she feels shy to her neighbor if they just accepting without giving back.
